Libraries Network: Objectives and Services
National Informatics Centre (NIC) has taken initiative to setup
a Libraries Network to bring all the libraries under an umbrella. NIC
is keen to extend ICT support to these libraries, especially the Ministries,
Departments and Public Libraries in India. As NIC is providing ICT support to all
the Central as well as State Government
ministries and other offices, it is natural to extend this support to their
libraries also.
NIC wishes to see all the Government libraries well moderanized
and computerized. NIC has developed e-Granthalaya Software for
Library Automation and Networking. The software is being provided at no cost to
the librarires including public libraries along with training and
support.
NIC has started another library service to give access to the
Union Catalog of Libraries powred by e-Granthalaya Software. The Union Catalog is
by-product of the catalog hosting facility being given to the libraries in
Inida. The hosting of the library catalog is being done at no cost to the
libraries, irrespective of the ILMS they are using.
Visitors of the site will access to Union Catalog and will search - a).
Individual Library b). Cluster of Libraries and c). All Libraries in the Network
NIC is also planning to develp this web site as a
National Portal of Libraries which will provide the data/information
uploading facilities to the registered members
This web site will publish the Directory of Libraries in India, Librarians
